What’s Love Got to Do With It?

What’s love♥️ got to do with it? This reminds me of the lyrics from Tina Turner, “What’s love got to do, got to do with it, what’s love but a second-hand emotion?”

Well, I want to say love has a lot to do with how we see ourselves, our relationships, and how we engage in ways that build up ourselves and others. We often go looking for love and when we don’t receive it, we can feel down or somehow blame ourselves for not receiving it. You know we may say to ourselves or others;I must have done something. I’m not pretty enough. I didn’t give enough of myself. I’m not worthy to be loved. Well, all of those thoughts are lies. You are more than worthy of being loved. You are responsible to love yourself, and you are more than good enough.

Each of us must love ourselves. We must treat ourselves with kindness, grace, and respect,  reminding ourselves of how unique, beautiful and valuable we are. We hold love, and can share our love with others through acts of kindness, soft words, setting boundaries, hugging ourselves, buying ourselves that special gift, and finding those things that make us truly happy. When we stir up our love and joy we find peace, contentment, and begin to feel whole.

So what’s love got to do with it? It has more to do with it than we can sometimes comprehend. It puts a pep in our step, a bounce in our walk, a kindness in our words, and a joy in our heart and soul. Love is a commitment to take care of ourselves. It reminds us that we are beautiful, important, complex, awesome, brave, amazing and so much more. Even when life throws some of its toughest challenges, our self-love and the love of others will carry us through.

Now, that’s love.♥️ And that's what love has got to do with it.

Best always,

Yvonne

A brief history

During the year 1980, in Memphis Tennessee, Frances Louise Dancy Hooks (wife of Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks) and Earleen Bolden organized the trailblazing Women in the NAACP (WIN), an unprecedented project which aimed to enhance the leadership roles of women both within the Association and in everyday life. The WIN organization raised funds for emergency relief and made a commitment to supporting Black/African American women, and their children and communities.

In 2004, Women in the NAACP (WIN) was approved as a standing committee at the Philadelphia National Convention in accordance with Article VIII of the NAACP Constitution and Bylaws. WIN’s national theme is “Outstretched Hands and Open Hearts to Women and Children.”

WIN is an integral committee of the NAACP. It has historically provided emergency relief funds to families and offered a medium for women to develop leadership, outreach, and advocacy skills for civil rights. Today, the legacy of WIN continues to inspire and remind us of the vital role that women have played and continue to play in advancing social justices, equity, and equality.

The purpose of WIN is to:

  • Enhance the leadership role of women
  • Serve as an advocacy vehicle for social, economic, political, educational, health
and welfare issues affecting women, girls, and children
  • Support the ongoing work of the NAACP and the Snohomish Branch

WIN membership is open to any NAACP member. WIN meetings are held in person or
virtually and may be held at the NAACP Convention and State meetings.
